Abdurahman Mustapha

Abdurahman "Maanie" Mustapha is an active member of the Claremont Reunited Alliance committee. He's passionate about reconnecting with those who were called Claremont their homes before the apartheid evictions and has countless stories to tell of the area he lived in.
Most of his memories are centred on his home at 12 McBrides Lane - the tiny, single-car lane which leads off 2nd Avenue. Here he lived in a cottage with his family of nine - four brothers, four sisters, and his parents Mugamat Saeed Mustapha & Jawayrah Mustapha (nee Solomons). Memories of McBrides Lane include playing a vast array of sports in the sandy field at the end of the street, now known as Oxford Square. He was an avid sportsman, with rugby being his first love, but always enjoying a challenge in other arenas.
His family was evicted in the early 70s, and were moved first to Primrose Park. Thereafter they found a home in Portlands, Mitchell's Plain, they still live today. Maanie remains close with his siblings.
Maanie married his wife, Fatimah Josephs in 1974 after meeting through mutual friends in Hanover Park. They have five children, Rushana Stemmet, Riyaad Mustapha, Shaheed Mustapha, Ismail Mustapha & Waheebah Jordaan and their family has been gifted with 8 grandchildren.
A trained carpenter, Maanie took up professional tiling after it proved more lucrative, inspiring one his eldest son to follow suit. He still enjoys seeing good craftmanship in carpentry work.
